January 2009 Article |
|
I would like to begin this month’s message by wishing each of you a happy and prosperous New Year. As we turn the page on 2008, let’s try in earnest to leave our problems or regrets behind us. We can’t go back and change anything, so it’s best to move forward with a positive attitude. We know that attitudes improve when you unload excess baggage, and move forward….my slogan is… “It’s too late for ’08… So get on line for ’09.” Having talked with a number of
our ERs, their unanimous consensus is that their New Year’s
celebrations were very successful. There was also consensus
regarding the morning after, but we’ll regard that as a personal
issue. We Elks are very fortunate to
have a place of our own to enjoy the holidays. We are in a
“controlled environment,” among friends, and enjoying their company
and an evening’s entertainment at a very reasonable rate. (Consider
the prices you would pay for New Year’s Eve at a commercial
establishment… it’s crazy. And if you consume quality libations in
the quantity that I do, it’s beyond crazy!) January is a busy month…some
of you already began planning on the best ways to get around those
resolutions you made. There is also the anticipation of a New Year
that you know will be better than the last one, based on the fact that
it can’t get much worse. This argument holds up only if things
don’t get worse. But on the bright side,
hopefully you Leading Knights have been busy getting your corps of
officers and committee people lined up. Good fortune is smiling
upon you when the officers know their parts, coaching arrangements have
been made, and in some cases, Ritual practices are already underway.
Yes friends, there are those Lodges that are all about “taking
care of business.” Whatever your particular circumstances are,
two- or three-month advanced planning always pays off. Just think,
next month’s nominations and elections of Officers take place. This
is when your advanced planning is validated, and you are confirmed in
the position for which you are anticipating being elected Now this
is Democracy at work! UPCOMING EVENTS Remember, Lapsation Committee
Reports should be given at the first regular meeting of the month.
Efforts to increase membership are futile if Lapsation isn’t kept in
check. Ritual Training and
Qualification Clinic will be held on January 10th and 11th at the
Woodland Lodge. Go to our NCD web page at ncdelks.org,
click on EVENTS for details. Complete and return Veterans’
Remembrance Reports to me by January 15th so I can submit them in timely
fashion to Grand Lodge. The DD Clinic is going to be here before you know it. Mark your calendar for Sunday, January 25th, at Elk Grove Lodge. All Exalted Rulers should have notified their Officers and Chairpersons and given them a copy of the “Clinic Program” by now. If this hasn’t been done, please see to it promptly. Besides those Officers whose attendance is required, all Lodge Officers, prospective Officers, Lodge Committee involved members, should be encouraged and are most welcome to attend this Clinic.
Fraternally,
